Tyre Pressure Matters

One of the simplest adjustments you can make at the track is tyre pressure, but it can have a huge impact on traction, consistency, and overall performance.
Slicks generally like lower tyre pressures to maximise the contact patch and help absorb shock on launch. Too much pressure can reduce traction, while too little can make the car unstable and inconsistent.
Typical starting range: 5.5–8 PSI (depending on tyre size, rim width, vehicle weight, and track conditions).
Radials work differently to slicks and usually prefer higher tyre pressures. Running them too low can cause tyre distortion and hurt performance.
Typical starting range: 14–20 PSI (depending on the tyre, rim width, chassis setup, horsepower, and track conditions).
Remember: There is no magic number. Track temperature, surface conditions, horsepower, vehicle weight, suspension setup, and tyre construction all play a role. Make small adjustments and keep detailed notes of what works best for your combination.
Example: A 275 radial on an 8-inch rim will typically require more tyre pressure than the same 275 radial on a 12-inch rim, where the wider rim provides better sidewall support and often allows you to run less pressure.
Do not overlook the small changes! Adjusting tyre pressure by as little as 0.5 PSI can be the difference between spinning the tyres and setting a new personal best.
