Pinion angle is the relationship between the driveshaft and the pinion yoke on your differential. Under hard acceleration, the rear housing naturally wants to rotate, changing this angle as torque is applied.
Getting your pinion angle right helps maximise tyre contact with the track, improves weight transfer and traction, reduces tyre shake and wheel hop, and can lead to more consistent 60-foot times.
If your pinion angle is too small, it can cause driveline bind and reduce traction on launch. On the other hand, too much pinion angle can waste energy through excessive driveline movement, create unwanted vibration, and lead to inconsistent performance.
Every race car combination is different, but setting the correct pinion angle is a critical part of getting your car to leave hard and repeat pass after pass. Sometimes the smallest adjustment can make the biggest difference at the starting line.
