Common Fabrication Mistakes to Avoid
Share
Great fabrication is not just about making parts fit — it is about building components that are strong, safe and reliable under pressure.
Prioritising appearance over function
A neat-looking weld is great, but proper joint preparation, penetration and technique are what really matter. A weld can look perfect on the surface and still fail if it has not been prepared correctly.
Poor fit-up
Large gaps between materials can make welding more difficult, increase distortion and weaken the finished product. Taking the time to measure, cut and fit components correctly before welding always pays off.
Using the wrong filler rod
Different materials require the correct filler material to achieve the right strength and compatibility. When welding materials such as 4130 chromoly and stainless steel, selecting the appropriate filler rod for the material and application is critical.
Using the wrong filler can compromise the integrity of the weld and potentially lead to failure — something you definitely do not want on a race car!
Using the wrong material or wall thickness
Choosing unsuitable materials can add unnecessary weight or create weak points that may fail under load. Every component needs to be designed with its intended application in mind.
Not checking your work
Measure twice, check your alignment and test-fit everything before final welding. A few extra minutes checking your work can save hours of rework later!
